An exhibition of works by Rudolf Khachatryan
In the halls of the Academy of Arts on Prechistenka an exhibition of Rudolf Khachatryan has opened — a master who makes one remember his images-formulas, whether they are portraits striking in their verism, executed with a sharply honed pencil, surrealized visions of metamorphoses of drop-shaped creatures, loving and suffering, or the latest works, which have no name, and it is hard to say whether they ever will, and which represent certain objects. In these last works, by which the artist himself is so captivated, a breakthrough is achieved to a "new," deeper reality — the reality of the hidden existence of matter, mysterious and spiritualized.
It so happens that certain masters of the twentieth century are drawn toward such "breakthroughs," stripping away, after artistic analysis, one layer of reality after another like so many shells, and drawing nearer to what is mysterious and unknowable, yet so alluring. It is enough to recall Vasily Kandinsky alone to understand what is meant. And their predecessor was the great Leonardo da Vinci. Kandinsky and Leonardo are examples for Khachatryan too — examples not for imitation but solely for inspiration. Thus centuries echo one another; thus begins the passage from the twentieth century into the next.
It is hard to say why it turned out so, but the artist, who is now sixty-five, began to draw from early childhood, mastering on his own the skills of a meticulous rendering of nature. This desire to be himself, imitating no one, stayed with him forever. In time, the study of the legacy of the great masters of the Renaissance, whether Leonardo or Dürer, made it possible to understand how rightly the path had been chosen: immersion in the element of reality, in the meticulous study of the surface of things and faces, in an understanding of the life of the folds of drapery, in the significance of a memorable detail, be it a scratch on the surface of a stone, the bend of a tree branch, a curl in a beauty's hair. The ability to see the world in the multiplicity of traces on surfaces under a merciless light that allows nothing to be concealed in half-darkness, where everything is put on display, is a particular gift. And yet in these works there is not a trace of any wingless naturalism; on the contrary, everything is imbued with a certain lyricism, and the very love of the detail — more precisely, of details, of the many particulars that add up to a whole — is evidence of a tender and heartfelt love for the object, for the human being in a specific setting.
Alongside these self-sufficient images, becalmed, self-enclosed, and significant precisely in their wholeness, others arise — dramatic, expressive, in which forms are torn apart. The lessons of European cubism and surrealism clearly made themselves felt here; they were needed in order to put to the test that world of silence and calm which the master had until then enjoyed and which seemed to him to be his own ("I drew it — I took it from the world to keep as a memento," such might be the formula of the drawings), "his" alone, so that he already had the right to decide whether to give these images to others. Let us note that he did give them, and a reputation as a subtle analyst and a virtuoso master of the pencil attached itself to Khachatryan quickly. But, we repeat, the hour of trials came. Discoveries drew him on.
In the display the viewer can observe how, from work to work, the sense of penetration into primal matter, biologically active and spiritually charged, grew stronger. There was no doubt that the chosen path would lead to new solutions, to a different understanding of the life of forms within the framed plane of canvas or paper. Generalized silhouettes, in which the profiles of mythological creatures can be made out, were laid one upon another, as though casting shadows. It was becoming clear that they needed a different life, a more spatial one, and so Khachatryan moves from drawing and painting to relief, to multidimensionality.
An artist sparing with color, without lapsing into gloom, he seeks to show — with a certain limitation of artistic means (therein lies the master's wisdom) — the elements of the world in their natural pristineness, while raging mythological creatures are imprinted into it, and now only their arms, legs, and torsos flash into view. A kind of organized chaos, "the passions of Nature in their pristine state," in the original inseparability of the living and the purely material. Having lived through the twentieth century, Khachatryan did not see its memorable marks of civilization: all those automobiles, aeroplanes, satellites, telephones, or computers. His confessional art is about something else, about what constitutes the very nature of the human being, about the bodily, about the principles of the life of forms in spaces. He studied the human body and its habits, working from posing models or draping his sitters in striking costumes and crowning their heads with wreaths. He studied the poses, movements, and characters of mythological creatures. He resolved to learn the qualities of matter in space. He...
The desire to verify and systematize everything, to examine it from all sides, leads to multidimensional objects that no longer merely invite one to walk around them but themselves rotate before the viewer, demonstrating all their complexity. Thus to the three-dimensionality of real space a fourth dimension is added — time. Everything multiplies like an echo, and only the principal axes and the principles of symmetry and balance help to preserve structure — the structure of the world. Here it is, another of Khachatryan's formulas.
A difficult, far from simple art.
What seems important is that in our time of doubts, of endless questions to which there is no answer, a time of vagueness and things left unsaid, the artist strives for consistency and clarity in his aesthetic position. It is philosophical in character. And that is valuable. And it would be a sin to think that this art is cerebral or contrived; it comes from feeling, it was raised on feeling and is saturated with it. The master simply resolved to know the world in its vastness and in the fullness of Being. He began with the study of the traces of Eternity on the works of human hands, on the very body of people, and then plunged into the bottomless ocean of space-time relations and metamorphoses. Keeping, as before, his own faith: what is seen is what is left as a memento.
Both a personal one and one belonging to all humankind.
Such art must be known.
