FOREWORD
The idea of writing a book about the artists of the sixties was suggested to me many years ago (in the early eighties) by E. Kharazyan. At the time the conversation seemed interesting to me, but no more than that.
Twenty years have passed! Armenia has gained independence and changed its political system of government; in that time the people have managed to live through both their spiritual unity and their disillusionment. In that time many of the artists who interest me have passed away, and some have left the country. The 21st century arrived. And then, one winter day, in the studio of the same Kharazyan, that old idea unexpectedly resurfaced. Edik invited Araik Shiraz and me for a serious conversation. We sat around a red-hot stove and discussed this tempting idea. We did not talk for long, but to the point. Having thought it over, both artists came to the conclusion that such a book-album was truly needed, and that I was the best person to do it, given many circumstances, including my character, independent of the influence of the artists themselves. The two shared the plan with Robert Elibekyan , who not only supported Araik and Eduard but tried to give the process a meaningful and constructive character.
Soon I proposed a concept for the book, which the artists approved with only minor additions. The essence of the concept was that the 1960s were the first decade in which, under the new conditions of a nascent state (and this, as is known, is a lengthy process), Armenian culture appears whole and clear. It was in this half-century that the priorities and directions of national culture began to take shape. In these decades the most outstanding figures of national culture began to arrive from various countries, giving Armenia itself and its spiritual and artistic wealth a new meaning.
The period of the sixties brings into focus the birth of that living link between past and present which had been lost over all those centuries. That is why I present a panorama of the cultural life of Yerevan and of the nation in this period in the context of the whole 20th century.
It was precisely in this period that Yerevan, as an artistic milieu and as the capital of Armenia, found its image, grew intellectually stronger and began to think and create independently in the arts. Naturally, I am speaking first of all of worldview and aesthetic generalisations, of a systematic artistic approach. I see the entire experience of national culture as a continuous stream of artistic imagination, as a whole and all-embracing phenomenon of life.
So, with the fall of the kingdoms of Ani and Cilicia, Armenian culture as a whole phenomenon is interrupted. After that only separate branches of art develop. With the revival of Armenian statehood (in 1918) those remarkable times came again, when all the conditions and components were present for the birth of a whole and systematic national artistic thinking. For many centuries Armenians had waited for these times of systematic self-expression, the highest stage in the development of a nation's artistic self-awareness.
Today our most important vector of intellectual and artistic search is directed not at SURVIVAL, as it was for a whole millennium, but at DEVELOPMENT. In every link of national culture the parameters of evaluation are changing, as are the fundamental notions that underlie the national tradition. Now our gaze must see, understand and evaluate the role and achievements of culture more universally. This is the highest good of state independence. We must overcome the atavism of the people's national thinking, which, lacking statehood in its lofty and all-embracing meaning, blindly substituted some notions for others. With the loss of the state we lost real control over our nation.
With the loss of statehood we, like any other people, were deprived of a great deal, if not everything. But no one was able to take away our inner freedom, which is magnificent soil for wisdom. No one could or did take away our love for the nation — hence our ancestral pride, our patriotism, our self-sacrifice… In the same way we are proud of our love for our homeland and for the history of the Armenian people, which we have often mythologised and continue to mythologise even today. That is why all our historical thought, which reflects our self-awareness and our worldview, resembles moralising, romantic literature with heroes and traitors, friends and enemies, and no balanced, objective analysis. True, by the beginning of the 20th century outstanding historians appeared (for example, N. Adontz or H. Manandyan), whose scholarly insight created favourable conditions for writing a fundamental "Political History of Armenia" in place of the existing "History of the Armenian People". The existing history also reflects the consequences of the loss of our statehood. Like much of what allowed us to survive under subjugation, made us rise from our knees and believe in a bright future, it may today hinder our harmonious development. But independence has come, and the old thinking cannot be objective.
We need an objective view of our culture as well. This too is the demand of the time. We cannot miss our chance to understand, model and pass on our intellectual experience to future generations of creators.
That, or almost that, is what I said that day by Kharazyan's hot stove. It was important for me to see in them like-minded people, personalities whose thoughts go beyond their own professions and set different creative scales. Having said all this and received the approval of my friends, I set about writing this book. For more than a year and a half I worked with great enthusiasm on this unusual monograph.
Many of the assessments and conclusions expressed in this work will be heard in our worldview, historical and artistic thought for the first time, and they may have many opponents. But it is important for me to look to the future and to give a decisive impetus to our worldview and culturological thought.
In working on the book, what mattered most to me was not only the cultural layer I am studying but also the context of national and world culture in which I see and place it all. The very structure of the book (compositionally a triptych), made up of philosophical and culturological essays — some written freely, others in a poetic manner — allows me to find for each artist his own angle and form, his own style, his own inimitable intonation. Each essay is meant to complement the overall picture of an artistic world that is open to the future but has not abandoned remarkable biographies. I tried to see their work freed from any objective or subjective opinions, from national short-sightedness. It seemed to me that awards and titles of different scale, which say little, could entirely cut up and deform the whole picture of my plan. That is precisely why I omitted them. I tried to show the real picture, which is our life.
As the author, I can say that while working on the book I felt myself to be one of the characters of that time, and worked with love and respect for every name mentioned even once on these pages. For in any highly developed nation artistic culture is a many-layered, effective system, continuous across all fields of art, in which two subsystems of culture are usually the most important: Folklore — the foundation of the national soul, where the nation's originality and potential are revealed — and High Professional art, dominant and leading, possessing a universal Measure for entering world cultural life. Today, however, our life is dominated by Low-grade culture, or, as the people have dubbed it, "Rabis".
My task was to show the turning point of the newly reviving High Professional subsystem — dominant and leading, creating a universal Measure — under the conditions of a whole and fundamental NATIONAL SYSTEM that is only just being reborn. This is precisely the state plus culture. It is the High Professional subsystem (for all the diversity of aesthetic views and trends, perhaps even mutually negating or complementary) that must raise the potential bar of national culture in the world ranking of cultures and civilisations. It will reveal to the world the advantages of our national artistic thinking as one of the distinctive, universal and enduring systems, in time as well as in space.
Today's Armenia is living through historic times, because to the system of CULTURE, which the nation preserved and in part developed, has been added the system of the STATE — the most universal mechanism for the development of culture. And the more developed the state, the fuller the understanding of the role and tasks of culture. All this becomes the most important occasion for my present reflections, also within the global system of the dialogue of civilisations. For the EAST–WEST dialogue is permeated by this single unifying idea, a single meaning of birth, synthesis and development.
For many centuries Armenians created their national culture (both spiritual and secular) — and protected it from alien influences — precisely within the bosom of the national church; here is another system of national self-awareness. And now the church and cultural figures must appreciate the supreme role played by the right choice of creators for religious art, whose origins go back to deep antiquity. Religious art too must have its own measure of evaluation, its own place in artistic culture and in the nation's self-awareness. And I am glad to note that today's Catholicos of All Armenians, Garegin II, wishes to create a burial vault for the Armenian Catholicoi. This is not only a noble undertaking but a true demand of the time. In such acts we can see the wholeness of our thinking and the correct emphasis on the scale of values of our history. We must move away from random actions towards a balanced, systematic approach.
A nation's self-assessment must be adequate to all its inner resources and to the reality that presents itself as fact; then self-expression will be full and harmonious. Otherwise we are doomed to defeat, as has happened more than once. It is therefore necessary that the nation live and create productively, not losing but ever more perfecting its system of selection (a measure of justice plus a mechanism of selection). Let us recall the English historian A. Toynbee, who says that if the measure of justice is violated in a nation or state, they are doomed to decay.
The artistic culture of Armenia has for the most part explored the sensual, emotional world of the human being. After all, an enslaved people had very little space left for creativity (the nation's immunity was destroyed), and that was first of all folk art and spiritual culture. Speaking more generally, we created a culture of feelings, and in certain centuries, more locally, a culture of sorrow, grief and wandering.
Living in an independent state, we are given the opportunity to live to the full and to be open to the world, preserving and developing the measure with which we perceive living processes throughout the world. Declarative patriotism does not become us. The intellectual wisdom of a nation is deep, unhurried analysis and timely, adequate action. And the counsel of the various arts is among the most important here.
Before you, reader, is a book that reflects not only on a whole layer of national culture but also gives a systematic assessment of the artists, of the whole phenomenon of the Armenian avant-garde of the 1960s and, more broadly, of national culture and its time. In essence it is the first decisive attempt to move beyond the descriptive history of Armenian culture to an analytical, all-encompassing understanding of the artistic life of the sixties and of the whole national history of culture in the context of world processes.
Rudolf KHACHATRYAN
DUALITY, OR THE MANIFESTATION OF THE IMAGE
The soul of a child is astonishing, especially a provincial child, especially if an anxious world of creativity lives in that fragile soul. Make a gesture — and on paper, in that magical white space, a world of reality both real and unreal can appear at once. Is a person really granted such an astonishing destiny — conscious transformation? And the house opposite your house that you are drawing is no longer a house but a whole world, part of your homeland, your knowledge, memory, biography… And then of all your creative work.
That is how I see the beginning of Rudolf Khachatryan's creative work and artistic search. It is here that the duality of his self-awareness and artistic imagination lies hidden, his indomitable desire to express himself and to know this world. Pride, perhaps even a claim (unjustified in some people's eyes) to exceptionality, characteristic of youthful fervour, begin to show in the young Rudolf from his very first steps in art. And this will be furthered by his enormous capacity for work, his scrupulous analysis of human relationships, his tenacious understanding of reality and the immense experience of his only teacher, the outstanding surrealist Yervand Kochar . A creator's ambition is the very engine of his creative search, which either raises the artist above the fray with his colleagues or shapes him as a failure, deforming and destroying him.
Rudolf Khachatryan's biography is both unusual and instructive. The future artist was born in 1937 in Yerevan and attended primary school from 1944 to 1948. Having obtained a school-leaving certificate, the young man entered art school in 1951. But literally a few months later he was expelled for disagreeing with the teaching programme. That, perhaps, is all that is known about his education. Yet alongside these events we see the main thing — a passionate desire to draw, to analyse, to absorb high culture, to live the free life of an artist among young artists and to associate with the intelligentsia. Intellectually, Yerevan at that time was not as diluted as it is now, and so the determined artist managed to find his place in this remarkable community of people and ideas. He gave himself entirely to his work, and fate was kind to his talent and gave him a chance to fly higher.
Thus began his real school of life, a school of learning human friendship and high intellect. A true school of art. Odd jobs alternated with awards both in Armenia itself and from abroad. And in Yerevan a community of the future "sixties" artists was already taking shape: in 1959 Onik Minasyan arrived from Leningrad, Ruben Adalyan was already actively working, Henrik Elibekyan was already "making noise", and Minas Avetisyan and Martin Petrosyan were soon to arrive… This was already enormous intellectual and human support, for the most important factor in the development of art is personal freedom and the solidarity of the artistic milieu — artists who can sincerely and with genuine interest argue, analyse, quarrel and rejoice in the fate of every work or exhibition. And here the role of the older generation, the great figures of national culture who miraculously survived the period of Stalin's repressions, was extremely great.
For Rudolf this was above all Yervand Kochar! In 1960 Rudolf Khachatryan became a member of the Union of Artists, which under the conditions of the time was a miracle. And if one adds his youth — Rudolf was only 23 — the whole picture of his future torments and ambitions becomes clear.
The sixties became the foundation, the basis of Rudolf Khachatryan's understanding of the world and his artistic perception. In these years national culture in Armenia made its first serious, deep thrust towards a great synthesis. Official ideology was rejected by the sixties generation as heresy. And here the role of Yervand Kochar, as a living embodiment of the turbulent artistic life of Paris in the 1920s and 1930s, was invaluable. His endless conversations about the "golden" age of the surrealists, futurists and dadaists were especially precious… Rudolf discovered and absorbed this living history of art, this "classical Paris", as a vivid spectacle, as a battlefield of diverse aesthetic and human passions. And here the young artists' interest in the best period of the outstanding master — the "Paris period", and especially the second half of the twenties up to 1936, when Kochar left the world capital of modern art and moved to Armenia, to Stalin's Soviet Union — is entirely natural. The "Iron Curtain" cut Kochar off forever from his beloved Paris…
For the young Rudolf Khachatryan, his passion for the work of the Maestro — as the young artists respectfully and lovingly called Kochar — was above all a time of mastering styles and movements (surrealism, futurism, cubism…), which, as D. Sarabyanov rightly notes, later protected him from the primacy of the idea, or even of the concept, over plastic form. In the sixties Yerevan was perceived as a genuine centre of contemporary art in the USSR. J. Steinbeck and Ch. Aznavour, Jean Lurçat, M. Rostropovich and S. Richter gave concerts and appeared here… In essence, in the Soviet country the capital of one of the union republics — Yerevan — nourished Moscow itself with the life-giving juices of freedom and the understanding of new forms in art. Artistic Yerevan was in fact free from the dictates of ideology. The Yerevan underground entered into real battle with the official establishment, and a serious struggle lay ahead. And in this atmosphere of artistic life Rudolf Khachatryan, with all the passion of his soul, plunged into this sweetest unknown. So came a new view of the world and of new artistic form; so a shift occurred in the very content of his art. Rudolf Khachatryan perceived the enrichment and synthesis of the cultures of East and West and of different epochs as a given, as the immediate experience of our days.
His move to Moscow (Rudolf Khachatryan married Natalya Schneider) proved a turning point for the artist; it was in this period that not only the style and form of his pictures changed but also his very approach to creative work as the most important vector that defines the creator's place in society. The salon manner, or "Renaissance style", as art critics liked to write in those years, and a certain mannerism in the works of the seventies (above all in portraits and still lifes) brought the artist fame and a real market of admirers. Here Rudolf preserved the refinement of line and the inner construction of form, which he had taken from surrealism as a world-sense and from the Italian Renaissance as form. Some portraits are superb, some saccharine and embellished, some flattering, and they open a whole page in the master's work (for example, the "Self-Portraits"), revealing the advantages of new symbols and new poetic metaphors. All this gave Rudolf confidence that his success was not accidental, that he had chosen his niche in society correctly and occupied it deservedly. Thus in Moscow the ambitious virtuoso draughtsman came to lead an aesthetic movement that has its culturological counterpart in other fields of Western art — say, the passion for romanticism in classical music, baroque cinema in film, or the post-classicists or representatives of the "Brussels school" in architecture…
His dizzying success among his admirers played both a positive and a negative role. In the artist's fate, on the one hand, the world of his graphics expanded, captivating R. Khachatryan not only with the richness and rigour of forms but also with the softness of expression and the melodiousness of line. But on the other hand he was increasingly drawn into saccharine flattery and superficial analysis. His artistic position in terms of official recognition at the time was advantageous. Out of the huge mass of very vivid, powerful painters of Armenia (he always felt himself to be an Armenian artist!), Rudolf Khachatryan became a distinctive pole in graphics. This intuitive search proved the most important step towards the great synthesis of his work. His subtle psychological dialogue with his contemporaries has an important determinant — a precise sense of the pulse of the time, the precise coordinates of this synthesis, which is what the Moscow art critic points to. These coordinates are the real vectors of a great and complex synthesis. The artist's somewhat embellished portrait monologue comes to an end (Khachatryan works in cycles and series united by a single stylistic or conceptual idea), and new frontiers arrive — new frontiers of an unknown but deeply experienced world.
For more than two and a half years the master lived and worked in London, and here (during the collapse of the empire!) he felt, as it were, the disintegration of the personality, the disintegration of the idea, the decay of morality — not a momentary analysis but one both subconscious and rational. The collapse of the empire, accompanied by flare-ups of bloody conflicts and a quiet, almost invisible war, when the configurations of countries and of the whole world began to change, was perceived and experienced by the artist in a remarkable way. Everything was disfigured — the country and people's fates were dismembered, the bodies of peoples and states were deformed; all this could not fail to be reflected in the consciousness of an artist aware of his spiritual community with this world. And Armenia in those days was bleeding and fighting for its historical truth. All this troubled and saddened him and opened up in him, as artistic metaphors, this tragic cycle of his whole oeuvre. That is why in this series of works the artist's gaze is at once painfully intent and defenceless. Hence too his affinity with the wartime graphic sheets of the Englishman Henry Moore. This culturological fact is important for Rudolf Khachatryan. It is in Khachatryan's London period that genuine pain, genuine sorrow, a breaking point and genuine feelings appear. His anxiety looks out through the many eye sockets of some beings, lonely, doomed and crying out. This is an entirely new line in R. Khachatryan's work; it is precisely this search that convinces one of the richness of his perception and analysis of life, in which a most complex spectrum of feelings and thoughts arises. Variations of a single human anxiety, variations of a single human longing, meditations on loneliness, where the interweaving of figures and voids are either sores or wounds or something resembling energy fields… Hypertrophied human figures, little lumps of life that have something to say and something to show amid the bustle and masquerade of life. All this is a continuous chain of psychological states — metamorphoses of associations.
And here the categories of Kochar's series "The City and Man" surface again, where the Eastern gaze is opposed by the harsh urban landscape of Western silence. Thus Khachatryan uncovers a characteristic layer of human reflection, seemingly quite everyday but absolutely allegorical. The agony of the empire continues in these series — a human agony, whether of regret for an absurd wartime childhood or a cry of despair for that freedom in which a lonely human heart may either drown or be destroyed… And here the pulse of time and the pulse of drawing touch, and this becomes an unusual story of the enormous responsibility placed on the creator as the expresser of new forms of life. Remember Leonardo: "The stream carried so much sand and silt that it was forced to change its bed." But the value of the water, the value of the river, the value of the clouds reflected in the water have lost neither their relevance nor their beauty.
This last period of Rudolf Khachatryan's work is, in my view, the strongest, the most capacious and the most universal and integral in terms of plastic language and of the images that trouble the artist and unite people. They give our contemporaries a chance to enter their own labyrinths of psychological obstacles. And now — Rudolf Khachatryan's latest cycle of works and his latest solo exhibition, grandiose and many-faceted. Dissatisfaction with his own search and the insolubility of the artistic tasks set by the time make the artist even more demanding and vulnerable. The "Objects" of the latest cycle presented in the book continue the ideas of the Yerevan and London periods. Thus the circle of his reflections at this turn of his creative quest closes…
What, then, is this world for the artist Rudolf Khachatryan? Emptiness or pain?..
