[From a Pushkin Scholar’s Diary]
It's NOT About Pushkin
Recently I saw on the Kultura channel a stunning masterpiece — a film by Rustam Khamdamov, made at Kazakhfilm, in 2005, I think. It cannot be described; one would have to retell everything, frame by frame, each of which is also a masterpiece. Absolutely everything is full of hidden beauty, exuded, it seems, by nature itself, which appears in the frame only now and then.
Some kind of barn — for cows or for sheep: mountains of straw, dung, pens and everything else one finds in a barn. The eye, however, stumbles on something strange: luxurious carpets, some lying about in the hay, some folded in stacks like laundry; evidently something quite different used to be here; later a grand piano will appear. And now from the depths of the barn comes some Kazakh old woman in a sort of coarse coat, with something like a hood. She opens her mouth — and we hear Cio-Cio-San's immortal aria.
The "plot" of the film is a concert of operatic classics. We hear the magical soprano of Bibigul Tulegenova, the noble countertenor of Erik Kurmangali, the divine voices of other soloists of the Kazakh opera, People's Artists of the USSR — and all this amid cows, sheep, hay and dung, in the same or similar interiors. And everything is suffused with the mighty, unobtrusive beauty of nature, which seems itself to be singing through these voices.
The concert is hosted by a haughty, glamorous "star" of the top-model type (the magnificent Renata Litvinova), bored, irritated, confusing Puccini with Verdi. At the end of the concert she gets fed up with all this tedium, her patience runs out, and she pelts the performers — not with flowers but, eagerly and furiously, with aport apples: here, choke on it! And at the very end we hear the duet of Tatyana and Olga, marvellously sung by two shabby old women (People's Artists) sitting in the open cockpit of an almost cardboard little plane like a U-2, so that this last, banished number reaches us from the heavens — like "the music of the spheres".
In this film, unlike anything else whatsoever (as are, say, the creations of Parajanov , Tarkovsky , Sokurov), in which the music of Puccini, Glinka, Schumann, Verdi and Tchaikovsky is heard — in this film music bids us farewell. It is a requiem for a great culture departing from us to where it came from. And at the same time it is a lament for a great multinational state that has fallen apart.
The film is titled directly, honestly and drily: "Vocal Parallels". Only those who "need it" will go to a film with such a title. Neither casino owners, nor students and staff of the Higher School of Economics, nor ministers of something — of education, for instance — nor plumbers, nor that oligarch who once publicly declared that after reading Dostoevsky he wanted to tear the book to pieces, will go.
I cannot, however, decide whether the author of the film is right, or not quite? What if — under a different title — one of them did go? And what if something awoke in his soul?
The programme ended at 1 a.m. And thanks for that; it is even quite noble against the background of our TV's usual iron rules. As if by order of Dr Goebbels — who believed that conquered peoples should be allowed only entertaining culture — almost everything at all outstanding or simply serious, soul-stirring, is shown here either when people are at work or on their way home from it, or late at night. The first directly deprives us of real culture; the second allows it, but at the cost of disfiguring a normal daily routine and simply our health. The principle can be formulated thus: ah, you want "great culture"? "the lofty and the beautiful"? Here, choke on it!
Khamdamov's film is a phenomenon not only and not simply Kazakh but, perhaps to an even greater degree, Russian. Above all in its very understanding of culture: its essence, its calling, its honour and dignity, its role in national destinies; this is the Russian understanding. The particularity of Russia, with its people whom Vasily Rozanov called "an artist-people", lies among other things in the fact that the leading role of great culture, which finds its ideals in the depths of the people's soul and educates that same people on these ideals — that its primacy is for Russia not a whim, not a luxury, but our daily bread, a condition of existence. In other words — its, Russia's, soul.
I have quoted more than once, and never tire of repeating, Ivan Ilyin's wise and piercing formula: "Pushkin was given to us in order to create the solar centre of our history" (author's italics. — V.N.). There it is: the centre not of literature, not even of culture, but of history. In no other country has such a thing been said about any of its greatest geniuses of the word — be it Homer, Shakespeare, Dante or Goethe; in this sense Russia is unique — and not only in the person of Ilyin. Not even half a century had passed since Pushkin's death, and by 1880, the time of the unveiling of his monument in Moscow, he was in fact recognized as virtually the head of the nation — as shown both by the character and scale of the celebrations and by Dostoevsky's speech and its unheard-of effect on society.
Pushkin's distinctiveness among the world's geniuses is an expression of the distinctiveness of Russia and its culture. Not "superiority" but precisely distinctiveness, dissimilarity — from Pushkin's untranslatability, proven many times in practice (as if he were some absolute, by nature impossible to retell), or the phenomenon of "my Pushkin" (other cultures have no "my Shakespeare", "my Cervantes", "my Schiller" and so on), to this very centrality of his in national history.
An amusing comparison suggests itself here. The place Russia occupies on Earth was, historically recently, given the name "heartland" in the West. The "artist-people" inhabiting the "heart region" of our planet recognize as the "centre", a kind of sun of their history and national destinies, not a tsar or a general but a poet, a writer, a "cultural figure"! — say what you like, there is something in that.
Closely connected with this heartfelt "something" (which includes the untranslatability of the "absolute", and "everyone has his own Pushkin", and much else) is, I think, our system of values, in which the spiritual is unquestionably above the material, ideals unquestionably matter more than interests, the moral is more important than the pragmatic, conscience more important than gain — and all these principles are absolute (which does not prevent us sinners from breaking them — but knowing that we are breaking them, without swapping black and white).
But this same poetic, mental "something" also has a practical aspect. A.N. Ostrovsky, at the already mentioned celebration of the unveiling of the monument, said: "Through Pushkin everything that can grow wiser grows wiser." I have had occasion to say and write that the world-famous phenomenon called "Russian brains" is of a cultural, humanistic rather than ethno-biological nature, and to quote Einstein: "Dostoevsky gave me more than mathematics, more than Gauss!" The height of vantage point, breadth of horizons, boldness and unexpectedness of turns characteristic of "Russian brains" — all this is akin to Russian culture, and to literature in particular: to the height of its reference point of values (put simply, the height of its ideals), the breadth and freedom of its view of the world and man, its bold, sometimes paradoxical dialectics, its love of and striving for harmony; in all of this Pushkin is the unsurpassed model.
It is precisely this distinctiveness, this dissimilarity of ours — in the eyes of many almost "idiotic" (from the title of Dostoevsky's novel) — that has been under attack for two decades now.
If high Russian culture, the vessel and expression of our mentality, the voice of the people's soul, remains thrown out onto the commercial street, if it finally ceases to be accessible to the whole people in their everyday life (this task was once performed — and brilliantly — by Soviet radio), and finally acquires the status of a lavish gala event (one recalls Pushkin's "Like a sacrifice, lavishly adorned?" — Onegin, chapter VII) with its sky-high prices and microscopic print runs — if all this continues, then the high ideals by which Rus lived for centuries will be turned inside out, or rather downward, and instead of "Russian brains" the world will get the "Russian mafia". However, that name will soon be an anachronism, for there will be no Russia — there will be something else, and rather terrible. Historically this can happen very quickly.
Many of Christ's parables are based on examples of market relations. Yet no one would claim on these grounds that the ideology of the Gospel is a market ideology. The market is a necessary thing; market ideology, however, is a terrible thing. It is what has become the ruling, one might say state, ideology here; everything is sacrificed to it: all the values, all the ideals that make Russia Russia. In particular, market ideology is the killer of high culture here. And not only of culture.
Several years ago a very famous oligarch, who was also a statesman, announced that for the reforms to succeed we have too large a population (it would have been more accurate to say "too many people", but the latter word is out of fashion nowadays). And comparatively recently a prominent Duma member declared that our people are generally not very suited to reforms: "The mentality must be changed!" That is what he said.
But they do not only talk. They act. And they are achieving something.
A teacher at the philology faculty tells of a seminar on Pushkin held with 20 students. The discussion was about the poem "I loved you...". The students were asked how they understood the last two lines:
I loved you so sincerely, so tenderly, As God grant you be loved by another.
Nineteen students answered that it was... irony. The twentieth answer was — mockery.
Hearing this from the young generation ("our future"), one might well be surprised. It did not occur to any of the young people (and they are, as a rule, clever nowadays) to think of magnanimity and selflessness, of readiness for sacrifice for the sake of another, of that true love which, according to the Apostle Paul, "seeketh not her own". Nothing human. As if such feelings did not exist. Only what is petty, self-interested and depressingly vulgar came into their heads. What is "market".
At one of my talks a very nice girl asked this question: "Tell me, why is Tatyana so anaemic?"
This is about the girl who, on seeing the hero, turned into a tangle of passion — see chapter VI: "'I shall perish,' Tanya says, 'but perishing by him is sweet...'"; and her last monologue in chapter VIII? And this woman is "anaemic"? What does that mean?!
It means that in many clever young people human feelings are somehow withering. And it also means that in our time the quality that was once called purity is sometimes understood this way ("anaemia"). Nowadays, evidently, not everyone fully understands it. And the fact that the heroine does not jump straight into bed with the hero provokes a condescending, almost squeamish attitude.
It's not about Pushkin: nothing will happen to him. It's about something else. One recalls Yuri Shevchuk:
What will become of the Motherland and of us?
Even a century and a half after Pushkin's death, everyone for whom Russia is not simply a place of residence was stirred by the words of the obituary written by Prince V.F. Odoevsky: "The Sun of our Poetry has set! Pushkin has died, died in the prime of life, in the middle of his great career!.. We have no strength to say more about this, nor is it necessary: every Russian heart knows the full price of this irreparable loss, and every Russian heart will be torn apart. Pushkin! our poet! our joy, our national glory!.. Can it really be that we no longer have Pushkin! one cannot get used to this thought!"
The obituary provoked the indignation of the high official and statesman S.S. Uvarov: "...What is this publication about Pushkin for?.. What expressions! 'The Sun of Poetry'!! For pity's sake, why such an honour? 'In the middle of his great career'! What sort of career is that? Was Pushkin a general, a military commander, a statesman?.. Writing little verses... does not yet mean pursuing a great career!" — this is how his subordinate conveyed Sergei Semyonovich's words.
I wonder whether Uvarov guessed the possible origin of the words "The Sun of our Poetry has set"? In 1263 in Vladimir, during a service in the cathedral, Metropolitan Kirill came out onto the ambo and said sorrowfully! "Brethren, know that the sun of the Russian Land has set!" — and thus the Russian Land learned of the death of Grand Prince Alexander Nevsky. Did Uvarov remember this well-known historical fact? Perhaps he did (multiplying his fury): after all, Sergei Semyonovich was not merely an educated man but the Minister of Public Enlightenment.
Or, as we would say now, of education.
And here I would like to address... no, not the Minister of Science and Education — he is not the right figure in this case — and not the numerous, I fear, ideological heirs of S.S. Uvarov who now decide the fate of Russian culture — but directly the country's top leadership. To address them roughly like this:
Gentlemen! My human and civic duty compels me to say that during your rule a catastrophe has occurred in Russia. I am speaking of an act devised separately from the people, without consulting knowledgeable people, in an atmosphere of secrecy, arrogant and at the same time cowardly; an act carried out, despite countless protests, with crude totalitarian pressure, and called "education reform". This "reform" is based — whether out of the ignorance of its inventors or out of some, God forgive me, intent — on principles, values and traditions decidedly alien to us; it threatens not only — to use Pushkin's word — Russia's "self-standing", but its very existence as a nation and, possibly, as a state (and in a fairly near historical future), and it constitutes a crime of national scale against the people and the country.
The essence of this "reform" is above all the eradication from the education system of any elements of enlightenment — in the cultural, moral and human senses of the word; the displacement from the process of teaching children and young people of the enlightening, educative, cultural and humanistic principle by a purely technological one.
The main components of this "reform":
1. The Unified State Exam — a "guessing game" modelled on the TV quiz "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire". Such an "exam" is being introduced, according to one Ministry of Education official, for the "unification" of the analysis of results; it completely excludes the student's personality from the examination process; the tests have nothing to do with a thorough and deep knowledge of the subject; the introduction of such an "exam" provokes the replacement of normal teaching by cramming. More on all this can be found, for example, in the Moscow State University publication "The Unified State Exam. A White Book", published last year.
2. The introduction of the so-called "Bologna system", which even in the West, from where it has naturally come to us, is here and there being partly or wholly abandoned. The method and meaning of this system are based on reducing the breadth and thoroughness of knowledge for the sake of narrow specialization.
3. Perhaps the most stupid and harmful: removing Russian literature from the category of core subjects. This is a slap in the face of our national literature headed by Pushkin, and of our whole great culture with its lofty humanity, and essentially of the whole people who created this culture — a slap delivered together with what may be a mortal blow to all of it.
The notorious "Allen Dulles plan" to destroy Russia, "a hindrance to progress", from within (since it could not be destroyed from without) — a plan that envisaged long, painstaking, tedious work of corrupting our mentality, overturning our system of values and subverting age-old ideals — is a child's toy compared with our "education reform", which will do all the same at one stroke — given that the clock "is already ticking".
Such a "reform", which promotes the rapid transformation of homo sapiens into homo economicus, of thinking man into market man, is more terrible for Russia than any invasion, economic crisis or political cataclysm; it is a neutron bomb that, without harming the body, destroys the soul.
If this act continues further, then in the place where Russia was there will arise some variant of the kingdom of the Grand Inquisitor; possibly in time there will be no one even "to call out Pushkin's name in the gathering darkness" (Vl. Khodasevich, 1921). And the real Russia will vanish like Atlantis — either into nowhere or, together with Pushkin, into the "music of the spheres".
But, gentlemen, perhaps all this does not interest you? Or is incomprehensible to you? In saying so, I do not wish to offend you; Kozma Prutkov said it wonderfully: "Many things are incomprehensible to us not because our concepts are weak, but because these things do not enter the circle of our concepts." If that is the case I am dealing with, all that remains for me — on the eve of Pushkin's birthday — is to make this appeal:
— Schoolchildren, students, teachers, scholars, figures of culture and the arts, fathers and mothers — unite! The Fatherland is in danger.
