Translated from Russian
The Discovery of Beauty and the Stereotypes of Beauty
V. Zimenko
In drawing the boundaries of what is specific to artistic creation, we have learned not to forget the special power of art, a power that affirms the beautiful, its poetic quality. Our recognition of this power, of course, has nothing in common with the mistaken view, rather widespread in present-day artistic consciousness, of some "myth-making mission" of the artist, supposedly called upon to create a fairy tale, a legend that does not fit within the laws of the real. By spreading and supporting such ideas, today's opponents of realism, and of socialist realism in particular, try to mount an attack on the fidelity to life, ideological commitment and popular character of realist art; they try to shake the epistemological foundations of the realist artistic image, which reflects life deeply and poetically and resolutely opposes mechanical copying and every manifestation of naturalism, with which certain bourgeois aesthetics and pseudo-Marxist aesthetics of a revisionist kind are, as a rule, so fond of identifying realism.
The complex poetic nature of art cannot fail, at each "turn of history", to draw the close attention of both theorist and practitioner, all the more so because life each time poses this question not quite in the way it was posed and resolved before.
When, ten or fifteen years ago, programmatic works began to appear, marked by a strict simplicity of form and a manly romantic intonation and opening a new path in our art, recognition did not come to them quickly or easily. But it could not fail to come, because their authors, who even then belonged to the cherished "pleiad of the young" — I will name at least G. Korzhev, E. Iltner, I. Zarinš, A. and P. Smolin, P. Nikonov, A. and S. Tkachev, T. Salakhov — boldly and resolutely proceeded from life. They knew about the war not from hearsay. They found their innovative strength on trips to the oil workers of the Caspian, to the Virgin Lands, to the new construction sites of Siberia...
And however strangely some critics may try, even today, to belittle and debunk this enormous "layer" of our art, not quite accurately christened the "severe style", the masters of this "creative pleiad" have firmly entered the history of the multinational art of socialist realism as purposeful innovators.
The images they created seem engraved in our memory — they are as definite and clear-cut as the images of a passionate, rallying poster, although what we have before us are not posters at all.
Bent like a tightly compressed spring, a worker-demonstrator with an angry, hate-filled look in his stern eyes, turned towards the enemies who have struck down his comrade, the standard-bearer. The central picture of G. Korzhev's triptych "Communists".
Six repair workers riding a launch over the heavy waves of the inhospitable Caspian. Like knights, majestically, calmly and composedly they set out for their everyday labour tournament, for the battle for oil. This is T. Salakhov's picture "The Repairmen".
Heavily and confidently, mighty, sturdy people tread the earth, which seems to hum beneath their feet. E. Iltner's picture "Masters of the Land". Under the artist's brush their coarse working clothes have flared up in a restrained many-coloured play of friendly hues. And in the distance, behind the people, as a background, as a frame surrounding them, the yellowing fields appear...
The image of V. I. Lenin in the picture by the Sverdlovsk artists G. Mosin and M. Brusilovsky was also presented in an unusual — tragic — emotional atmosphere, with temperament and sharpness, in some respects debatably, harshly, but expressively. It was also poetic, because in this way a facet of the great historical truth of the most strained and most difficult year of our history — nineteen eighteen — was revealed.
Each work is polemically directed against superficial, naively decorative admiration of life from a studio window, against the varnisher of reality, against the idealiser.
And the very fact of an honest portrayal of a new phenomenon of life — the opening up of the Virgin Lands, the gigantic new construction sites of Siberia, flight into space and so on — was already no small merit of the artist. And so was the portrayal of a new reading of history. The peculiar "reportage" quality of the approach accounted both for the ardour of the response and for a certain one-dimensionality in it. The latter became extremely pronounced among the epigones.
At later exhibitions works began to appear that formed a series of a different intonational and, more broadly, figurative order.
In the portrait of the poet Rasul Rza, the Azerbaijani master T. Salakhov seeks an essentially different figurative order than in the passionately intense portrait of Kara Karayev. Even if the former artistic height has not yet been reached on the new path, the task of portraying the personality is set in a special perspective. The image of the poet is treated as the image of a philosopher who reflects on life unhurriedly and from many sides, and who in this analysis gains the power of a resolute, uncompromising transformer. Hence new moves in the organisation of form, a new, heavier and more solemn music of line, a severe palette, yet combined with a search for colour. (Incidentally, it would be wonderful if so original and time-perceptive a portraitist as Salakhov worked more consistently on images of contemporaries who do not necessarily belong only to the circle of the artistic intelligentsia.)
The outstanding Belorussian artist M. Savitsky consistently turns to various subject motifs, striving to embody, through the most ordinary things, a lofty aesthetic ideal of beauty and of the happiness of being.
So it was in the picture "Loaves", which reads as a true hymn to the great labour of the grain grower. It is important to note here that the artist seeks a way of building the image in which its painterly and plastic structure turns out to be filled with a ramified content that goes far beyond the limits outlined by the subject motif as such. In this there is, of course, a continuation of what our art had found earlier. But there is also its own special, still more purposeful search for a "multi-layered" set of associations born of a "silent" but precisely and subtly organised painterly image, something to which many artists today pay great attention. In this connection one may note that the everyday figures of the women carrying freshly baked loaves of bread are given in a solemn compositional situation with a complex rhythmic pattern, which in a special way "tunes" the viewer's eye, his perception.
Similar artistic ideas are also present in the picture "Land", recently shown at an exhibition in Moscow. People on the land, its defenders and its toilers. How many such pictures there have been. But only a few have been remembered. Very close in motif, but different in figurative order, is E. Moiseyenko's canvas "Land", which shows three machine operators in the evening during a short break. It is a sharp work, with a philosophical "subtext". But Savitsky finds his own solution. He seeks not so much the vivid sharpness of the moment as a thorough unhurriedness. He invites us to a long reflection on the fate of the land, on the life of the people who have settled on it and are closely bound to it. And his colour language is aimed at concentrating attention — that is why the rhythms are so majestic and the colours so muted yet rich, the landscape so spare, the surroundings so sparing in detail, the expression of the faces of the people depicted so ambiguous.
Moiseyenko too, however, in the picture "Cherries" — one of the most expressive and poetic canvases at the All-Union Jubilee Exhibition of 1970 — went in the same direction, although he did not, of course, abandon his established, vivid, expressive handwriting of an artist of romantic temperament. The legendary time of the Civil War. A brief rest of Red cavalrymen sprawled on the grass by a machine-gun cart on the outskirts of a hamlet. The warm sun, the fresh bright-green grass, as if seen for the first time after the labours of war, and the juicy berries on which the Red soldiers feast — tired, but confident in their strength and rejoicing in life. A simple everyday scene grows into a large, capacious image of the time.
Of the peaceful days of the present — the unpretentious canvas of the Ukrainian painter T. Yablonskaya "By the Blue Sea". There are no people here. But the friendly blue house on the shore, and the washing flapping merrily in the light wind, the lilac sky, the yellow sand — everything sings a song about the joyful existence of man.
The subject of her other widely known picture, "Youth", is also unpretentiously simple — a young man walking across his native land, across a green, peaceful meadow, has stopped by a small pond. It is an ordinary place, seemingly unremarkable in any way. But now the lanky figure of the young man has stretched out tensely and frozen... The round pond, which was evidently once a dry, deep bomb crater, seems to "gaze" at us with the anxious deep-blue mirror of its water. No, it is not the pond that "gazes" — it is the indelible reality of the war showing through from the gloomy depths. And not for nothing have the stiff sedge leaves, like sharpened bayonet blades, rising up, pierced the mirror surface of the water... The tragedies and heroism of the past call out to the youth of our day — and their call has been heard by the heart...
Complex, lofty figurative devices, combined with restraint in the basic figurative intonation, distinguish three outstanding memorial complexes of recent times that have been awarded Lenin Prizes — in Volgograd, Salaspils and Khatyn. They form an important side of the artistic solution of the Monument to the Latvian Riflemen in Riga and the monument to the 26 Baku Commissars in Baku, which received USSR State Prizes in 1972.
Even from these few examples one can see that the creative thought of artists of different stylistic trends persistently turns to solving the task of the artistic, poetic comprehension of life, posed differently and turned in a different way than before. They are very keenly interested in the many-sidedness of the human image, the complex emotional atmosphere of its social existence. At the centre of the artistic process today is the plastic shaping of a more complex aesthetic ideal on a more ramified social basis, with a broad spectrum of international ties both within our country and beyond its borders. It is no accident that in the plastic structure of the artistic image — in painting, in sculpture and in graphic art — we now sometimes visibly and distinctly observe, and sometimes sense as a hint, the presence of complex layers of assimilated and reworked culture, of the artistic experience of different countries and peoples.
In the sculptural portraits of V. Oniani the experience of Greek classical art has been used with tact. D. Zhilinsky masterfully develops the layer of artistic traditions of the Early Renaissance, which he explored and mastered before anyone else in our country. The Armenian graphic artist R. Khachatryan also turns to them. Artists freely use the experience of the masters of Old Russian icon painting and the legacy of Gauguin, Van Gogh and Cézanne. An excellent knowledge of Cézanne is revealed by many of V. Ivanov's landscapes, which lose nothing thereby in their national originality and artistic fullness.
Artists have long drawn generously from the living spring of traditional national folk art. A bright perception of the world, the purity of a people's soul, vivid poetic imagination, the refined colour harmony, polished over the centuries and distinctive in each people, the linear and plastic rhythm — all this actively enriches the work of the contemporary artist as well. The best recent works of I. Kuzminskis, M. Grecu, I. Vieru, T. Yablonskaya and I. Klychev, works that are highly original and vivid, are living testimony to this.
Speaking of the variety of traditions on which present-day Soviet artists rely and which they widely use, one should particularly note the abiding and ever-deepening interest in the great legacy of the Peredvizhniki (the Wanderers), the centenary of whose first exhibition our artistic community and the whole people celebrated at the end of 1971. The series of jubilee exhibitions showing the art of the Wanderers — great innovators in art and fighters for social progress — continues even now. Viewers recently had the opportunity to acquaint themselves with the portrait art of the Wanderers; an exhibition of the Wanderers' landscapes at the State Tretyakov Gallery aroused great interest. Our art is renouncing its former imitation of the art of our great predecessors; that art is being creatively assimilated in its deepest, most living foundations. We have now learned to understand that the heirs of their lofty art are not only artists close to them in manner, such as G. Ryazhsky, B. Ioganson, B. Yakovlev and V. Efanov, but also such masters as A. Deineka, M. Nesterov and P. Korin, whose style is so unlike the style of the works of V. Perov, N. Kramskoy, I. Repin, V. Surikov and V. Vasnetsov, but whose meaning, whose essence of creative work carries the same pathos of civic spirit — though enriched by new social experience — the same affirmation of the lofty ideals of the popular spirit and humanism.
As we see, the present moment in the life of Soviet fine art is marked by the posing of difficult tasks. But precisely because of their complexity — one might even say their daring — practice often fails to provide a fully satisfactory solution to them. There is no need to keep silent about this. All the more so because progress in any field of creative work cannot be imagined as a steadily rising straight line.
We all know the high assessment that the Party gave at the XXIV Congress to the patriotic work of our artists. But it is also well known that at the same time a good many definite critical remarks were made about this work, because its results still often fall far short of the original conception, or else the conception itself lacks ideological depth and the power of poetic generalisation of the facts of life.
The life of a developed socialist society building communism naturally dictates higher demands on the aesthetic activity of its citizens, for the aesthetic principle is entering life ever more deeply. For the first time in human history, a developed socialist society has acquired real opportunities to shape artistic culture as a system of a harmonious type, that is, to provide in a planned way for the balanced development of the sphere of professional and amateur creative work in the whole variety of kinds and genres of art and stylistic forms, as well as of the sphere of artistic education and aesthetic propaganda, with all the material and spiritual means and methods of carrying out educational and propaganda functions that belong to it.
What socialist society carried within it potentially from the very beginning of its existence has only in the last five or six years begun to be recognised by us as a real feature of artistic practice. Monumental and decorative art, which formerly lagged very far behind, has developed extraordinarily. Design began to develop rapidly — that is, the art of the artistic engineering and styling of tools of labour and of articles of mass consumption. Art is beginning to solve a problem of enormous importance — the comprehensive artistic organisation of the material environment of a person's public and private life.
Very characteristic and telling is the fact of a more even distribution than before of aesthetic values and of artistic activity itself across the territory of our country, the formation and growth of national creative groups of high professional qualification, the comprehensive development of art in all the variety of its kinds, genres and themes in all the union and autonomous republics of our country. This is one of the most important world-historical cultural achievements with which we arrived at the 50th anniversary of the Soviet state. Indeed, the memorial complexes at Salaspils or at Khatyn, striking in the power of their artistic impact, are not merely local phenomena, Latvian and Belorussian. They are lofty all-Union values. The pictures of the Turkmen I. Klychev and the Latvian E. Iltner, of the Moldavian I. Vieru, the sculpture of the Georgian E. Amashukeli, the graphic art of E. Sidorkin, a master from Kazakhstan, the graphic art of V. Vasilyev, an artist from Yakutia — these are magnificent works that enter the all-Union treasury of our art not by virtue of any special privileges, but by right of the most worthy.
But our time demands the utmost dedication. An artist — and not only one living in cultural centres but also one far from them — cannot fail to feel the full measure of responsibility for his work, responsibility before history.
Today it is not acceptable, it is impossible, to refer to patriarchal backwardness, ignorance, naivety. And yet such excuses, unfortunately, sometimes occur in our artistic practice, in criticism.
A developed socialist society has a special aesthetic colouring. The range of viewers' aesthetic interests has widened. The creative quests of artists have become more diverse. The keenly personal principle is receiving in artistic life still wider scope for expression and fulfilment. But it is important to stress that, in creating scope for the personal, life by no means pushes aside the social. On the contrary, it is precisely the social that is the main, the great thing that truly elevates and inspires the personal — in this case, the artist's personal creative search.
One cannot, however, help reflecting in this connection on the fact that today, when visiting certain fine-art exhibitions, one often finds oneself, as it were, in an entirely different "artistic world", connected by too thin and fragile ties with the full-blooded, noisy, passionately seething world of reality. One remembers how a participant in a recent Moscow youth exhibition submitted for display a picture depicting the inner mechanism of old locks. The work was done competently and carefully — but questions arose at once: what is it for, what facet of the poetic in life does it reveal, what does it say to the mind and heart of a contemporary occupied with difficult matters?
One cannot agree when an artist, perhaps from the very best motives of professional self-improvement, narrows and limits the range of his observations of life, immersing himself in a world of art-historical impressions and professional, craft interests. Or, in any case, inadvertently or deliberately upsets the subtle, delicate, but highly necessary "balance" between the one and the other.
How distressingly monotonous the use of the riches of folk art in the broad artistic life has sometimes become; how the treasury of national folk traditions is frittered away and devalued when, quite out of place, "folklore motifs" suddenly begin to "sound" in some professional work of painting, sculpture or graphic art, and the living appearance of an everyday scene, the image of a contemporary, acquire features of the "doll-like", the "gingerbread", the "ornamental pattern", and so on and so forth.
The pure and severe art of the slightly naive, clear-eyed sages of Old Rus', of the Italian and Northern Renaissance is beautiful. But how, and in what way, is it related to the present-day tasks of creative work? This must be very clearly understood, otherwise it is easy to slide onto the path of imitation and stylisation.
Even among highly gifted and exacting masters one sometimes notices how painfully complex is the task of creatively using distant layers of humanity's artistic culture to solve present-day problems. The Belorussian master M. Savitsky has painted with care and inspiration the sublimely tragic canvas "Execution" (1968). And yet one is left with the feeling that the inner conflict between the timelessness of the heroes' traditional icon-like "standing before" and the living concreteness of the subject — the execution of partisans by the fascists — has not been fully overcome. The experienced and original Latvian master R. Valnere wants to speak about the present ("Ponte Vecchio", "Self-Portrait"), but it seems that the artist's living feeling is somewhat constrained, limited by Renaissance stylistic "frames".
As for less experienced, young artists, one can often see a very superficial "reading" of the classics, where creative assimilation is replaced by the use of a "device". At the Moscow youth exhibition, for example, there were several such works. I will name at least V. Lykov's portrait "Girl with a Ring", in which only a hint of living contemporaneity remains. But at the same time one would like to note how appropriately and tactfully the devices of the classics are used in the talented works of E. Romanova and O. Filatchev. The lofty figurative order of the young T. Nazarenko's picture "Execution of the Narodnaya Volya Members" has also absorbed many living impulses from the severe, sublime art of the masters of the Renaissance.
It is understandable that many young artists are drawn to the classics by its affirmation of the ethical values of the personality, by the harmony between the real and the ideal. These questions have now become acute not only in our aesthetic practice but in the whole of social life. But one must not forget the social orientation of our ideals, the class character of our ethics, even though they have a universal human significance. One cannot fail to notice that a certain order of figurative means, taken as a system, inevitably carries within it a certain, essentially different socio-historical ideological tendency and sometimes forms peculiar "aesthetic screens" that fence art off from life.
Let us recall how certain "artistic stereotypes" took root in our easel and monumental painting, relating both to subject "moves" and to the construction of form. Let us recall, for example, such a popular motif as mother and child, which has become depressingly stereotyped, or the flatness of forms, the slowed, solemn rhythm in compositional construction and so on. As a rule, all this turns into a frozen "static quality" of the image, which is far from always suited to depicting our turbulent, dynamic time. That is precisely why, incidentally, it was consistently avoided by A. Deineka, passionately in love with the present, one of the great innovators of Soviet art, whose many-sided and amazingly integral, mighty genius has still, it seems, not been fully appreciated.
Under certain conditions a stereotype is a very important and highly useful instrument of the spiritual mastering of the world. The human psyche cannot start each time, as builders say, from the "zero cycle". A person uses stereotypes, that is, a set of habitual notions, of norms, concepts and judgements that have taken shape and been worked out in personal, everyday and social practice. This makes it easier to find one's way in a changing situation, to map out a line of conduct, to evaluate people and things.
But the positive significance of the stereotype is not unlimited. Fitting well with the task of quick orientation in conditions that may be complex but are on the whole ordinary, and with the task of classifying and identifying objects and phenomena, the stereotype comes into conflict with the task of the creative cognition of the new, the unusual. Here, as a rule, deep-rooted stereotypes that yield to change only with difficulty can bring, and do bring, a great deal that is negative, slowing down the process of working out new ways of approaching phenomena, new measures, and then new notions. The breaking of old stereotypes is one of the secondary, but psychologically extremely complex and laborious problems of any creative work. In art — all the more so.
Art acquires genuine power by aesthetically mastering new layers of life, artistically exploring its new phenomena, new relationships between people, the features of their character, of their social destinies, the special plastic appearance of the people themselves and of the material environment of their lives. One of the most important aims of art is to cultivate a creative approach to life, to shape a lofty ethical ideal in which the creative principle occupies an organic and important place.
Speaking of the stereotypes that exist in our artistic practice and do it no small harm, it is at the same time necessary to stress the essential value, for creative work, of a clear artistic idea, of a well-thought-out and balanced artistic system. Impulsive spontaneity is necessary and good too, of course, but within certain limits, and especially in those forms of art that are not bound up with a complex structural and compositional solution. Meanwhile, life is making ever more decisive demands on the art of our day precisely for such complex forms, in which an answer to the burning problems of the present could be realised, or at least certain questions troubling society, the person as citizen, could be posed.
In the life of art, and in human life in general, there is that which is eternal in its value and in the constancy of the interest it arouses. Among such eternal aesthetic problems of artistic creation is the problem of its connection with life, with the real world of man's many-sided social activity. The art of socialist realism has always shown and still shows the inseparability of the aesthetic and fidelity to life. But the demands for depth in the cognition and reflection of life in art are now posed in a new and decisive way, for the very content of life has become more complex, and the old "aesthetic yardsticks" often no longer fit it.
No one, it seems, forgets about fidelity to life in art, but the potential of this fidelity in a number of works is clearly low. What is the matter? It seems to me that the main point is that the inner development of the problem itself, its complex correlation with the whole of the rest of the problems of creative work, is not always taken into account. It seems so self-evident in its fundamental importance and "immobility" that, having declared it, people are already satisfied. But today one feels especially keenly how important and necessary it is to come close to life, to enter into life. How necessary it is to step over a certain artificiality of device and to overcome an excessive reverence for this or that tradition, however excellent. How necessary it is to move away from everything contrived, external and lightweight, both in practice and in theory, and to ensure a broad path for artistic and scholarly work that rests on a deep, independent reading of life. Only in this way are discoveries born that enrich the treasury of culture.
The art of socialist realism by no means rejects legend, or fairy tale, or the traditions of folklore. But it is important to find their proper place in the life of art. One of the essential aesthetic consequences of the scientific and technological revolution of our time is that the mythological "haze" in the creative imagination of humanity is dispersing, and it is acquiring clarity and power in the cognition and creation of the real. And the new upsurge of our art will evidently take place on the basis of an even deeper poetic penetration into the living dialectics of being, as a result of a mighty artistic reflection of the real dramas and heroic deeds of life.
