The Heroic in Art
Notes on the Exhibition "On Guard of the Motherland"
G. Kucherenko
A generation is judged by the heroes who belong to it. Oleg Dmitriev¹
The All-Union art exhibition "On Guard of the Motherland", shown at the Central Exhibition Hall in Moscow in May–June of this year, became a significant event in the development and affirmation of the military-patriotic, heroic theme in Soviet fine art of recent years. Its display included works that worthily, in vivid imagery, reflect the heroic, legendary events of past wars, works devoted to military labour, nobility and courage, and to the high spiritual qualities of our contemporary — the Soviet soldier standing guard over the peaceful frontiers of our Motherland. It would seem that time relentlessly counts off days, months, years, decades. It would seem that it just as relentlessly carries away from us the events of the Great Patriotic War, to say nothing of the Civil War… And yet artists — not a few individuals, but hundreds, thousands — not only continue to turn to the heroism of the past, but keep finding in it ever new sources of creative work.
The great meaning of artists' turning to the theme of war lies, in our conditions, apparently also in the fact that nowhere are human characters and the fates of generations laid so bare, nowhere does everything superficial and showy in a person collapse so quickly, visibly and openly, and nowhere, finally, is everything best that was in a person's soul — but until a certain time only smouldered within him — revealed so vividly, fully and many-sidedly as it is in war. That is why the military-patriotic theme in art is a theme not only of yesterday, but of today and even of tomorrow. The poet Nikolai Gribachev was deeply right when he once expressed the following thought: "Without correctly understanding our man in war, we… are hardly likely to understand him fully in peacetime either"².
*
The heroic-patriotic theme in the art of the last two decades develops along two main thematic lines that complement and enrich each other. The imaginative embodiment of the soldier's feat is the first of them. The theme of the present day — works of various genres devoted to military labour, its heroic and romantic expression, the spiritual world of today's soldier — is at the basis of the second.
Both lines, each with its own individual features and regularities, were widely represented at the exhibition. Among the best works on display is the canvas "Immortality" by the Ukrainian artist T. Golembievskaya.
…Fellow villagers have gathered at a white obelisk crowned with a golden star, erected in honour of those who fell in the war. Fastened to the top of the obelisk, snow-white embroidered towels decorated with bright Ukrainian patterns flutter in the wind like battle banners. On this festive sunny day representatives of several generations have come to honour the memory of those who once shielded their beloved Motherland with their own bodies: their wives, friends, their children, and perhaps their grandchildren too. Here are war veterans and the very young. The canvas is painted in a calm, narrative manner. Unhurriedly and in detail the artist tells her story of this solemn event. True to her creative manner — recall her "Ukrainian Kumantsi" and "A High Award" — here too she miraculously enlivens the green carpet of lush Dnieper grasses with bright highlights of light. The idea of the continuity of generations, the philosophical meaning of the nation's feat — "the battle is fought not for glory, but for the sake of life on earth" — is affirmed by the whole colour structure of the canvas. Perhaps not everything here is ideal. The picture is somewhat "overpopulated" with figures, some of which lack ideological and emotional expressiveness and hardly serve to develop the main meaning of the work. But these are details. As a whole the canvas is perceived as a solemn requiem, a tribute of the whole people's memory to the soldiers who died for the freedom and independence of the Motherland.
One of the most remarkable phenomena of the exhibition may perhaps be considered the magnificent battle canvas "The Field" by the well-known Belarusian painter M. Savitsky. At the basis of its subject is a complex dramatic narrative — perhaps about a particular feat, but one that by the artist's will has become in our minds a symbol of the courage and heroism of the Soviet soldier.
A handful of our soldiers, having engaged in hand-to-hand combat, are crushing the enemy's vanguard. But hundreds of enemy soldiers are relentlessly closing in on the scene of the fight. Their black helmets ominously cut through the tops of the tall wheat. The tragic outcome is evidently near. And yet the main pathos of the picture lies in its heroic and optimistic content. Our soldiers defend the Russian field like the bogatyrs of fairy tales. Dying one after another, they will gain immortality in the memory of their people, will become the heroes of poems and novels, songs and films, and of such battle canvases as M. Savitsky has created. "The Field", like most of this talented artist's works ("Partisan Madonna", "The Vitebsk Gate", "The Oath", "Breads"), has a consistently symbolic character. It is the huge, almost boundless field of grain — occupying two-thirds of the canvas — the personification of our land, our nature, our riches, our Motherland. It is also the contrast of the two colour principles on which the colour scheme of the canvas is built — the light, radiant one and the dark, ominous one: the sea of ripe, golden-gleaming wheat, the figures of our soldiers close to it in tonality, engaged in hand-to-hand fighting with the enemy, and the enemy soldiers dressed all in black. This solution carries a deep meaning: our soldiers, even outnumbered, even if they are destined to die, are on their own native land, in their own field, as if at one with it; the enemy, on the other hand — and this is emphasized in every way by colour — appears here as something alien, unnatural, defiling our peaceful land by its presence. One notices the figures of two dead men, depicted by the artist in the foreground and deeply symbolic. Above the fair head of our soldier, ears of golden wheat swollen with life bow in mournful grief: "…the earth is his mausoleum — for a million centuries…" And right beside him, like a gigantic black spider, lies sprawled the figure of a dead invader. In his last moments he viciously drove a knife up to its hilt into the earth, which, though defiled by his marauding boot, was never conquered by him. Only two figures. Already dead. And how much they say!
The artist N. Ovechkin treats a similar theme in a different way. His picture "The Feat" is really not so much an easel painting as a work close in its imagery and plastic structure to a monumental mural. And although at the centre of the composition are the figures of soldiers holding the line they have taken to the last, it would be pointless to look here for the individual traits of character of each of the soldiers depicted, as we find them without much difficulty, say, in the battle painting of P. Krivonogov ("Defenders of the Brest Fortress"), E. Moiseenko ("The Militiamen"), V. Puzyrkov ("Black Sea Sailors"), E. Samsonov ("For Every Inch"), M. Kholuev ("Soldiers. 1941"). In fact, the artist did not set himself such a task. What interests him here is not so much the events themselves in all their lifelike verisimilitude, nor even the human being in his individual psychological expression, as the general pathos of the grandiose battle of the Kursk Bulge. Having built the canvas on sharp colour contrasts between the dark silhouettes of tanks, self-propelled guns and artillery piled up in utter disorder, on the one hand, and the orange, fiery tongues of the blaze and the crimson sky, as if also engulfed in fire, on the other, the artist has succeeded in giving his battle canvas a symbolic resonance.
The two-figure sculptural composition "The Battle" by the Kievan M. Savelyev also captivates with its dynamism, expressiveness and explosive emotional force. This is battle art in its most direct and vivid expression. It is small in size. Yet its compositional and plastic solution gives the work features of genuine monumentality. Looking at this sculpture, one recalls the heartfelt lines of Yulia Drunina:
"Here he is, who did not return from battle, Who stepped out onto the line of fire In order to shield with himself The Motherland, the capital and me"³.
Unfortunately, by no means all works devoted to the soldier's feat, to battle in the most literal sense of the word, are convincing and impressive. Some of them, however regrettable the admission, are distinguished neither by depth of conception, nor by convincing circumstances, nor by strict selection of compositional and plastic means, nor by novelty of solution. And without this, naturally, there is neither truth, nor depth, nor emotional impact of the artistic image. Such is the impression made, for example, by A. Shaimuradov's sculptural composition "The Feat", in which the truth of the image has vanished behind the naivety and contrivance of the device.
However, there are many ways of comprehending, through images, the heroism shown in wartime. The striving of artists to understand not only the military feat as such, but also the whole wealth of its ideological and moral components, leads many of them to create works devoted to front-line life in its most varied aspects: "before the battle", "between battles", "after the battle"… And this in turn brings to life most curious tendencies toward active interaction and even, perhaps, a "fusion" in contemporary military-patriotic art of almost all the genres previously known to us: battle painting proper, genre, portrait, landscape and still life. The possibilities of such an approach to depicting a person caught up in war are almost limitless. And this is very important. The spiritual world of the hero is revealed here, as a rule, more richly than is possible, say, in multi-figure battle canvases. This way of embodying the heroic in images could provisionally be defined as a "movement toward the human being", from the heroic in its "general expression" to the heroic in the concrete and individual, from the heroism of millions (naturally, without forgetting it!) to the moral expression of the heroism of each soldier. This path was defined interestingly and vividly by the well-known Soviet film director S. Gerasimov: "The secret of the success of these works (he is speaking of the films 'The Fate of a Man', 'Ballad of a Soldier', 'The Living and the Dead'. — G. K.) lies above all in the fact that their creators 'managed to look closely at the soldier as a human being… to discover the truth of his feat with all the heaviness of military labour, the bitterness of defeats and losses, and the doubled happiness of a victory won through suffering'"⁴.
There were quite a few such works at the exhibition. In painting they are "Black Sea Sailors" by A. Alekseev, "Partisans. Wartime Winter" by I. Vecozols, "Roads of War" by M. Samsonov, "Front-Line Days" by O. Sadykh-Zade, "Dmitry Fyodorovich with His Adopted Son" by V. Gavrilov; in sculpture, "Militiaman" by A. Toropygin, "Woman Front-Line Soldier" by G. Pyasetsky, "Partisans of Belorussia" by V. Potashnikov; in graphic art, "In Memory of Guards Captain Aina Damberga" by G. Vaska and "A Talk about the Family" by E. Gribov.
Each of them is distinguished by the originality of its creator's manner, by its own plastic devices, its own imagery, and its particular ways of revealing the "dialectics of the soul" of the heroes depicted. The compositional and plastic device of "close-ups" underlying "Front-Line Days" by the Baku artist O. Sadykh-Zade, which allowed him to find an original solution for the long-familiar subject of front-line girls at rest and to penetrate the spiritual world of the girls of wartime, has little in common with the canvas "Along the Roads of War" by the Grekov Studio artist M. Samsonov, treated in a traditionally narrative yet also deeply psychological way. The colour structure of "Black Sea Sailors" by the Muscovite A. Alekseev, based on two contrasting tones — the dark forms of the marines and the whitish-silvery gleam of the sea foam left in the wake of a fast military launch — differs markedly from the delicate watercolour half-tones of the painting of the Riga artist I. Vecozols ("Partisans. Wartime Winter"). The originality of composition of the black-and-white linocut by the Riga artist G. Vaska, which allows her to sharpen to the utmost the heroic and psychological aspect of her heroine's image, can hardly be confused with the graphic sheet by the Ivanovo artist E. Gribov, treated in the genre manner of a simple story about everyday life in the trenches, when the soldiers, having barely recovered from battle, settle down for the traditional smoke: "…a mine exploded, a shell flew past, and again people talk about life…"
The exhibition also included works based on a very complex subtext, perhaps not fully clarified by the author himself. The most interesting, and also the most controversial, of works of this kind seems to us to be V. Popkov's picture "Father's Greatcoat". It is a complex, psychological work, built on subtle associations, barely perceptible half-tones and nuances. Let us say at once: the artist's attempts to understand the contradictory manifestations of people's characters can evoke nothing but respect. All the more so since the artist is genuinely talented. What, then, is lacking in the picture? In our view, definiteness in the moral and philosophical conception that the artist affirms as the result of his search, however complex and many-layered that search may be. A son tries on the greatcoat of his father, killed in the war a quarter of a century ago. Somewhere in the depth, in a peculiar "cinematic" dissolve, in mysterious lilac half-tones, the shadows of old women appear like ghosts. These are evidently those who never lived to see their loved ones return from the war. Judging by the palette shown in the foreground, this is an artist, which emphasizes the autobiographical character of the work. His face expresses a complex range of feelings. It is longing, and sorrow, and confusion, and doubt… In short, the artist leaves us alone with a complex world of emotions. And in this, it seems to us, lies the understatement of the picture's content.
*
A special place in the exhibition was this time occupied by works about the life and training, the nobility of character and purity of spiritual motives of the present-day soldier. Never before had the present day been represented so diversely at such exhibitions. There were a great many works on this theme. True, figures, as is well known, are not always convincing in art. But in this case they are supported by the comparatively high ideological and aesthetic level of a wide range of works on army and navy life of today.
What is gratifying above all is their variety of subject and theme. The hard labour of soldiers and the intense rhythms of their daily training are the subject of works such as "Alert Group" by Yu. Tsirkunov, "Alarm" by N. Ovechkin, "Sentries of the Sky" by B. Kosulnikov, "Morse Code" by V. Shcherbakov, "Military Builders" by Yu. Chernov. The character of the new combat equipment with which today's army and navy are armed is convincingly recreated in works such as "In the Far North" by Yu. Pokhodaev, "Combat Readiness" by F. Usypenko, "Nuclear Ship" by N. Denisov, and others. But what occupies artists most is the image of the soldier himself, who has mastered complex and powerful equipment and is devoted to the great cause of building a new world. There are many such works in painting, in graphic art and in sculpture. Among them are "Yu. A. Gagarin" by Yu. Chernov, "Knights of the Sky" by N. Ovechkin, "Day and Night" by I. Broido, "Duty Officer" by S. Antonov, "At Rest" by V. Pereyaslavets.
The "lyrical line", in which artists succeed in conveying various facets of the emotional world of our contemporary, the beauty and nobility not only of his moral but also of his aesthetic impulses, was represented by the paintings of V. Sokolov ("Spring Is Spring for Everyone") and P. Zhigimont ("The Larks Are Singing"), the compositional portrait by F. Nieminen ("Sergeant Tverdokhlebov") and the sculptural composition "The Sapling" by I. Tabidze. The first of them, for example, depicts a soldier-artist, a deeply poetic nature, keenly sensitive to the unique charm of his native land and the gentle breath of nature just awakening. V. Sokolov's picture, marked by heartfelt lyricism, attracted the attention of many visitors to the exhibition.
At the Fourth Congress of Artists, both in the report and in the debate, special emphasis was placed on the ever growing and strengthening ties of artists with industry, collective farms, and with military units. The exhibition is new proof of this. Recall if only the character of the graphic series "Missilemen" and "Testers" by S. Antonov, "The Struggle for the Ship's Survivability" by K. Nazarov, "Before a Long Voyage" by V. Kaluga, and "Over the Project" by I. Bordachev. All of this had to be seen with one's own eyes, by visiting missile units, warships and design centres. And not only seen, but also understood — the deep processes that determine the life of the army and navy today.
Let us take as an example I. Bordachev's picture "Over the Project". The work has many details (a drawing board, a desk, rolls of drawing paper, technical reference books) that define the nature of the work and interests of one of the representatives of the numerous body of military designers. But the point, naturally, is not only in the "details". A huge uncurtained window occupying a third of the canvas leads us, together with the hero of the picture, out of the compartment of the design bureau into the cosmic expanses of the high night sky. This starry sky not only creates a special colour contrast with the warm, yellow-golden colouring of the interior. At the same time it carries a great figurative load, as if symbolizing the heights of human thought and the scale of today's scientific search. But the main thing in the picture is the image of the officer. He is a man with a broad range of engineering and design thinking. One of those who represent in our day the heroism of everyday "humdrum work", of that "most prolonged, most stubborn, most difficult heroism…"⁵ of which V. I. Lenin wrote with admiration in his day in "A Great Beginning".
The theme of border service was widely shown at the exhibition. And it is treated in many ways. The stern breath of distant border outposts is felt in G. Bogdanov's canvas "Soldiers on the Eastern Border", in N. Kasumov's work "Silence", and in M. Roiter's graphic sheet "On the Trail". Especially interesting are works treated as "military landscape". There are many such works. Among them are "The Edge of the Siberian Land" by V. Sibirsky, "At the Very, Very Northernmost Outpost" by K. Shebeka, "Outpost in the Mountains" by L. Kodzhoyan, "The Border" by M. Merenkov.
Not everything, it is true, succeeds for artists in mastering the theme of the present-day army and navy. There were unsuccessful works at the exhibition. There were also controversial ones. Take, for instance, S. Kurbanov's picture "A Concert of Soldiers' Amateur Performers". In his search for a new form and sharpened compositional rhythms, he becomes so carried away by purely formal devices that he forgets the most important thing — the human being and his spiritual world. As a result, the soldiers depicted on the canvas look remarkably alike and inwardly inert. The rhythms have acquired a self-sufficient significance here, eclipsing the many-sided world of the living person.
During the 1960s–70s, our artistic practice has shown an attraction to the most varied traditions of the art of the distant and comparatively recent past. Such an orientation — this has been written about more than once — if it is creative and truly innovative, if it helps the artist to comprehend more deeply the world of our contemporary, holds nothing dangerous. Perhaps even the contrary. It is enough to recall the best works of D. Zhilinsky, T. Salakhov , E. Iltner, T. Yablonskaya, M. Savitsky and many others. Often, however, an active orientation toward the devices of folk art of the distant past turns into stylization in imitation of the primitive. And stylization almost never leads to great art. To some extent the canvas of the well-known artist V. Zazerskaya is guilty of this; it is more reminiscent of a sketch for the set of a fairy-tale opera than of an easel painting.
If with regard to Zazerskaya's canvas we allow for the possibility of other points of view concerning its merits and shortcomings, then some portraits and compositional graphic sheets by other artists seem to us frankly unsuccessful. And the point here is one of principle, not of the number of works named. Their authors convey what they have seen in life without generalizing it, without making it typical, without, finally, spiritualizing it with a bold flight of their artistic imagination. And for this reason these works are illustrative in character.
Unfortunately there were many works at the exhibition whose authors tell of the heroic events of the past and present as of something customary, taken for granted. Their works lack deep reflection on the facts of life that have become the object of the artists' attention, and do not carry that ideological and emotional charge which alone, according to the well-known laws of genuine art, can "strike fire from the hearts of men" (Beethoven).
On the whole the exhibition left a good impression. It showed that the best works on the heroic-patriotic theme are distinguished by depth and ideological richness of content, by a vividly and consistently expressed aesthetic diversity, and by a wealth of genres, styles, motifs and national forms. As we have seen, a powerful body of painters, graphic artists and sculptors from all the national republics takes an active part in the development of military-patriotic art. The events of the Civil War and the Great Patriotic War are perceived by them as a great relay of unfading heroic deeds.
In conclusion I would like to make two remarks addressed to the organizers of the exhibition.
The exhibition "On Guard of the Motherland" was almost devoid of a retrospective in the broad sense of the word. A hint of a retrospective was, however, made. These are two works by M. Grekov ("Tachanka" and "Standard-Bearer and Trumpeter"), the compositional portrait by I. Brodsky ("S. M. Budyonny"), and sculptural portraits by N. Tomsky and L. Kerbel. All this is very good. But if a hint of a retrospective is to be made at all, then, given the diversity of genres and of thematic and stylistic traditions of the 1920s–30s — which, as is well known, have been widely developed in the work of artists of our day — it should have been made more capacious and many-sided. And then it would be clear to the mass viewer — and this is of fundamental importance in forming the aesthetic culture of communism — that alongside the powerful and fruitful traditions of M. Grekov's battle painting, our rich aesthetic heritage also includes the painting of A. Deineka ("The Defence of Petrograd", "The Downed Ace", "The Defence of Sevastopol"), the painting of K. Petrov-Vodkin ("Death of a Commissar"), and the painting of P. Shukhmin ("The Order to Attack").
And secondly. The exhibition, which represents a kind of summing-up of the last five years in the development of the heroic-patriotic theme, lacks works so significant in every respect — created, incidentally, in recent years — as "Soldiers. 1941" by M. Kholuev, "The Year Forty-Three" by P. Ossovsky (from the cycle "Frontiers of the Motherland's Life"), "Nameless Heights" by T. Yablonskaya, "Partisan Wedding" by M. Dantsig, "Victory" by E. Moiseenko, "The Blockade" by A. Smirnov, "Dedicated to the Women of the Great Patriotic War" by V. Gromyko, the graphic art of G. Krollis, I. Elgurt, A. Munkhalov and others. A pity… Their absence noticeably affected the overall level of the exhibition.
